Peacock tail feathers are large and colorful, and many people enjoy them simply for their beauty.Since they naturally replace their feathers annually, the feathers have come to symbolise renewal. I have tried to capture this natural beauty in this feminine necklace.
I have used many different techniques in the construction, including hammering, layering, weaving and binding. The eye of the feather has a 3D element and is raised in a dome effect from the rest of the piece, drawing your eye to the faceted Amazonite.
I have set the pear shaped faceted amazonite stone in a viking knit bezel and wrapped the top edge, neatly framing the stone. This is surrounded with a layer of faceted Lilac Amethyst rondelles, each one individually wrapped, securing it in place. Then a layer of 4mm Lapis Lazuli beads have been attached, it is these beads that create the dome effect. This pear shaped central detail is surrounded by swirls of wire, which have been hammered, coiled, wrapped and woven, to create the feather. I have accented the wire with Lapis Lazuli beads of graduating sizes, to balance the design.
The feather is attached to the chain by two wrapped bails so that it hangs on the Viking knit chain at a slant, (the last image shows the position it hangs in).
The handmade Viking knit chain is finished with handmade wire end caps, accented with Lapis Lazuli rondelles and a hand forged hook clasp.
The pendant is 3 1/2' long and 1 3/4' wide and the dome section is 1/2' tall. The chain is 18 1/2' long.
I have oxidised this piece, to highlight the intricate detail.
