This Celtic brooch is part of my Leaf series of jewelry. Made with copper and Turquoise to create a wire wrapped Penannular brooch. The simple mechanics of this style of fastening makes it suitable to use as a brooch or scarf, kilt or hat pin. The last image in the sequence shows you how to wear it.
I have made the brooch with very thick copper wires to form the shape, which I have hand forged and then hammered, making the structure very strong. Once the frame is formed l add intricate woven detail, which secures the large drop shaped piece of Turquoise as the focal point. I have encased the stone in hand forged leaves of copper wire. The flowing lines of copper wire continue around the stone.
The pin is made from thick 1.6mm wire, which I have filed and sanded into a point. I have created a leaf on the hinge of the pin. The thick wire of the pin makes this brooch unsuitable for delicate fabrics. It is perfect for chunky knits!
The brooch measures 2 1/4' across, 2 3/4' tall and the pin is 4' long.
