Penannular Brooch - Woven Sterling silver and faceted Garnet
Sterling silver and faceted Garnet

I was inspired to make this piece by the beautiful Celtic and Viking brooches. Penannular brooches are also known as Fibulas or Celtic brooches. They are an open circle with ornate terminals, which secure the over sized pin that is attached to the body of the brooch and can slide freely. The simple mechanics of this style of fastening makes it suitable to use as a brooch or scarf, kilt or hat pin. The last image in the sequence shows you how to wear it.
I have made the brooch with multiple thick sterling silver wires to form the shape, which I have hand forged and then woven with thinner fine silver wire, to create an attractive pattern but also to make the structure very strong. I have attached faceted Garnet drops at the terminals of the brooch and to the pin, creating an ornately detailed piece
I have oxidised this piece to really highlight the detail.
The brooch measures 1 1/3' across and 1 2/3' tall. The pin is 2 7/8' long.
